Vicki Lam's Artist Statement:

Extract: "As an artist, the creative process is not merely a means of expression but a continuum - an ever-evolving dialogue with my materials and the world around me...

I believe in the power of reinvention. By stripping the layers of my resin works or repurposing other pieces in my journals or in my art studio, I breathe new life into them. I create collage papers and through a careful process of adding texture paste and glue skins, they are reshaped into something entirely new...

My palette includes alcohol ink, acrylic ink, acrylic paint, watercolour, pens, pencils, stibilo’s, various texture pastes, glues, resin and wax each adding unique characteristics to my work..."

Vicki Lam’s display in the Budgeons Case

Vicki's' artwork displayed at the Richmond Library is eye-catching, colourful and thought provoking. The many textures and the use of various paints and colours catch the natural daylight as the library doors open. Passersby are drawn to the special contents of the case by glistening effects of light bouncing off the artwork.

It is clear that Vicki is an accomplished artist. She has placed thirteen of her works into the library cabinet, each one carefully presented. Many are framed and there are two pieces made from blocks that I would call sculptures. The presentation of the framed works is thoughtfully considered, even down to the alternating black and white frames across the display.

Fluid Abstract 2, size variable by Vicki Lam, mixed media, ink, pen, acrylic on paper, on birchwood cubes

Included in the display cabinet are 'tools of the trade' and samples of coloured resins. This helps us understand what is involved in producing these artworks.

'Detail' and 'invention' are words I would use to describe the effort that has gone into creating each piece. Vicki layers the media to create 3D effects, even in what might be considered 2D art. Colours are rich and vibrant.

Out in Nature, 43 x 33 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, tissue paper, crackle paste, glitter, ink, pen, acrylic

"Out in Nature" is a captivating mixed-media piece that immerses viewers in a lush interplay of blues and greens. The detailed use of the mixed media adds a dynamic and shimmering texture. Its abstract composition invites personal interpretation.

Renewal after the Burn, 27 x 35 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, tissue paper, resin peels, glitter, ink, pen, acrylic

"Renewal after the Burn" is a delightful mixed-media piece that celebrates the endurance of life. The 3D effect of poppy-like flowers, with pearl-like petals, has the flowers emerging and thriving despite the heat of the burn. The flowers are set against a striking background of gold circular leaves outlined in deep blue and accented with fiery orange.

The Whimsical Tree, 24 x 19 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, shells, Venetain Plaster, ink, pen, mica flakes, acrylic

"The Whimsical Tree" radiates vitality through its intricate textures and bold colour palette. The upper trunk and branches, rendered in raised deep gold, create a contrast against the turquoise and purple background, while vivid orange leaves add bursts of energy.

Vibrant Blossoms, 10 x 10 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, birchwood panel, acrylic, gelli plate, texture paste

"Vibrant Blossoms" is a lively mixed-media piece presented on a 10 x 10 cm birchwood block. The 3D paper petals, reminiscent of the daisies of 1960's "flower power", are playfully accented by matte turquoise splashes. The crisp design give the artwork a fresh, modern appeal.

Celestial Symphony, 10 x 10 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, Venetain plaster, texture paste, resin skin, ink, pen, acrylic

"Celestial Symphony" is an enchanting abstract work on a compact 10 x 10 cm block. Predominantly in shades of blue and purple, there are striking maroon-red details and shimmering gold highlights which add detail.

Fluid Abstract 1, 1 7 x 7 x 7 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, glue skins, Venetain plaster, ink, pen, acrylic

"Fluid Abstract 1" is an intriguing mixed-media piece that combines structure and creativity in a restricted yet rich palette of blues, greens, whites, pinks, and oranges. The artwork features twenty-seven intricately painted cubes, arranged in three rows reminiscent of a Rubik's Cube, sitting on an open box of deep blue. Each cube face has unique details that invite closer inspection.

"Fluid Abstract 2" is a free-form mixed-media creation. Unlike its structured counterpart, Fluid Abstract 1, for this piece the birchwood cubes seem to be arranged spontaneously allowing us to see more of the artwork on each cube. The variable arrangement highlights the individuality of each block, inviting viewers to explore the vivid, hand-painted details from every angle.

Magical, 24 x 24 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, dried flora, resin, ink, pen, mica flakes, acrylic

"Magical" is a mixed-media piece that brings the essence of a forest to life. The shiny, raised green stems and branches create a tactile effect, evoking the lush vibrancy of nature. Accents of petal-like shapes in blue and deep red add contrast.

My Garden, 44 x 32 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, tissue paper, texture pen, Mylar, ink, pen, acrylic

My Garden" is a standout mixed-media piece, featuring intricate layers and textures. Three prominent white and gold abstract flowers are set against a richly textured background of greens and golds. In the foreground, delicate green paper leaves and airy blue flowers add a sense of lightness and playfulness to the piece.

Across the Gorge, 24 x 24 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, glue skins, resin, ink, crackle paste, pen, acrylic

"Across the Gorge" captures the vibrant interplay of contrasting colour. Orange textures glisten suggesting the tops of trees, while bright light green outlines define the tree trunks against the blues and greens of the gorge. At the base, rich textures of orange and brown balance the composition, grounding the scene.

After the Rain, 24 x 19 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, dried flora, tissue paper, ink, pen, acrylic

"After the Rain" is a serene mixed-media piece that captures the refreshing beauty of nature. Unlike others in the collection, this work has a lighter background. The shapes of the leaves feature. Deep olive oval leaves and thinner, pointed light blue paper leaves add contrast and focus to the delicate composition. The piece evokes a tranquil moment of renewal after a cleansing rain.

Fireflies at Midnight, 24 x 19 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, tissue paper, resin, crackle paste, ink, pen, acrylic

"Fireflies at Midnight" captures the mystery and magic of a night time forest. Layers of greens and darks hold the space for purples and blues to come forward. The background supports the sparkling gold spots that delicately suggest the flicker of fireflies.

Flora with a W, 24 x 19 cm by Vicki Lam, mixed media, glue skins, Venetain plaster, ink, pen, acrylic

"Flora with a W" is a richly textured mixed-media piece. Two gold-edged, translucent white flowers feature in this art work supported by a radiant background of blues, golds, light purples, and hints of orange. The intricate layers and interplay of textures draw the viewer in.

This collection showcases an exquisite variety of mixed-media artworks that celebrate texture, color, and imagination. Each work offers a unique perspective on nature and abstraction. The collection also features playful structural pieces such as Fluid Abstract 1 and Fluid Abstract 2, inviting interaction and curiosity. With themes ranging from serene natural moments to whimsical interpretations of forests and gardens, the display captures a rich spectrum of artistic expression.

Congratulations Vicki.
